The most common alternatives to real hands-on science are
remotely controlled
experiments (Remote Laboratory), prerecorded real experiments (ranging
from simple
video sequencies not allowing interactive use to Interactive Screen
Experiments)
and different types of simulations (Virtual Laboratory). Usually
missing interaction
with real equipment as well as lack of cooperation is attributed to
standard simulations. Here we present a class of virtual experiments,
which allows to combine
the advantages of real experiments with those of computer simulations,
where both
the number of workplaces is not limited in principle, and time and
place for performing
experiments can be chosen at will. We call these highly interactive
applications
PHYSTOONS, because they are not based on digitized images of real
equipment, but
on cartoon like realistic drawings of laboratory devices. A PHYSTOON
user interface
is highly intuitive and mouse driven only. Operating virtual devices is
very similar
to using real ones.
